The festival crescendos with the arrival of mythical characters like Tang-tang-mu, Zam, and Kengpu, each playing a vital role. Tang-tang-mu, adorned in a mysterious black mask and turban, represents the plainsman who helped in the journey of sacred texts from Tibet. Zam, embodying a protective deity, safeguards this profound knowledge, while the Kengpu dancers, with their synchronized movements, ward off evil forces.Makpepus, the revered warrior guardians, not only protect the women carrying holy texts but also engage in a stirring war dance, chanting “Cho-bla-cho... Ahi yo... Cho-bla-cho...” at various points of the festival. As dusk falls, the energy at the Gompa stream intensifies with the start of the water war. Laughter and tradition merge seamlessly as the Makpepus joyfully splash water, filling the air with a lively spirit. Their spirited war cries echo, adding to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.Immersing myself in these captivating dances, experiencing the thrill of the water war, and receiving blessings beneath the moonlit sky have left an indelible mark on me. The Chekor Festival not only deepened my connection to our cultural heritage but also highlighted the profound communal spirit that unites us.
